STORY: Dominant first half sets the tone in an upset road win over Kansas State

"On this team, all we do is work, trust each other, and push each other to the highest limit.” Sun Devils shock the Wildcats out of the gates with a three-touchdown lead, earning an upset win over No. 16 Kansas State

Sacks Allowed

Kinda thinking this may be an issue this season (although Leavitt’s mobility and Arroyo’s adapting to Leavitt’s strengths should help that quite a bit)

Vs Wyoming:

1)nothing fancy just a speed rush by a Wyoming WALK-ON that may not have been touched by Iheanachor

2)inside rush by 6’2” 245 Wyoming DE Siders who may not have even been touched by Atkins

ASU only attempted 22 passes which would have been the fewest of any game in 2023 so expect more opportunities for sacks allowed

Numbers between Sam Leavitt and Avery Johnson are uncanny

Both in their 2nd season (Johnson as a true soph & Leavitt as a RS Frosh......Johnson has played 1 more game in 2024)

Sun Devil Football Postgame Notes - Kansas State

THE ASU VICTORY…
  • Gave ASU eight wins in its first 10 games for the first time since the team finished the 2013 season with a 10-2 regular season record.
  • Guaranteed the Sun Devils will finish at least .500 in road games (excluding the shortened 2020 season) for the first time since 2014 (4-2).
  • Kept the Sun Devils within a game of second in the Big 12 standings.
  • Moved the Sun Devils to 5-2 through seven games in conference play for the first time since 2014 (also 5-2).
  • Handed K-State its first loss at home this season (was 4-0) and just its fourth in the last three seasons (was 15-3).
STARTING STRONG
  • It is the second time this season that Arizona State has not allowed a point on the first three drives of the game (also did so in the Wyoming game).
  • It was also just the second time this season that Kansas State had not scored in the opening frame, notable as ASU entered the contest ranked 70th in the country in allowing 5.7 points per first quarter.
  • Leading 21-0 after a half, it was the largest halftime lead vs. a ranked opponent since 2014 when No. 9 Arizona State held a 34-10 (+24) advantage at the break against No. 10 Notre Dame. They went on to win that game 55-34.
  • The last time Kansas State was shutout in the first half on home was vs Texas on 09/29/2018. The last time K-State was shutout in a half was the second half at TCU on 10/22/2022.The last time KSU was shutout in a half at home was the second half against Tulane on 09/17/2022. The last time Kansas State was shutout in the first half was at Iowa State on 11/21/2020.
  • The Sun Devils have not punted on an opening drive this season and have scored on the first drive in seven of 10 games. They have touchdowns in six of those (a field goal against Wyoming), threw interceptions on the opening drives against Utah and Texas Tech and turned the ball over on downs against UCF.
  • One area ASU had struggled with on the road this season was the last ten minutes of the first quarter and the first ten minutes of the second quarter (anything outside the first five minutes of the half and last five minutes), Prior to tonight, ASU was outscored 65-17 in the category before outpacing the Wildcats 14-0 tonight.
ODDS AND ENDS
  • Parker Lewis’ 47-yard field goal in the third quarter was his first made field goal since Nov. 27, 2021, while he was a member of the USC Trojans.
  • With Parker Lewis’ 47-yard field goal at the 11:00 mark in the third quarter, ASU has now outscored opponents 66-13 in the “middle eight” of games - the last four minutes of the first half and the first four minutes of the second half and 3-0 today.
  • The Sun Devils held Kansas State to just 14 points, the Wildcats’ second-lowest scoring output of the season. K-State was averaging 31.2 points per game entering the contest. It marked the 51st time in the last 77 games since 2018 that ASU has held an opponent under 30 points (66.2 percent) and the eighth time in 10 games this year.
RANK AND FILE
  • The victory was ASU’s first ROAD win against an opponent ranked in the College Football Playoff weekly rankings, with Kansas State checking in at #16 this week.
  • It was just the fourth win over a CFP ranked team overall (vs. #6 Oregon in 2019, vs. #15 Utah in 2018, vs. #10 Notre Dame in 2014).
  • ASU moved to 2-0 in games against AP Top-25 teams this year (#16 Utah) with K-State ranked #20 this week.
  • The win gave ASU its first official road win against an AP Top-25 team since beating #15 Cal and #18 Michigan State in 2019 (ASU’s 2021 road win at #20 UCLA was later vacated).
AIR JORDYN
  • Tyson’s 11-yard catch at 7:48 in the third quarter gave him a new career high for single-game yardage, surpassing his previous best of 137 yards against Oregon in 2022 while he was a member of the Colorado football team. He finished the game with 176 yards. He also set a new career high with 12 receptions in the game.
  • Wide receiver Jordyn Tyson has eight touchdowns in the last six games and 624 yards (104.0 yards per game) on 44 catches in that span. In the first four games, he had 14 catches for 209 yards with one touchdown.
  • Tyson now has nine receiving touchdowns, the most since N’Keal Harry had nine in 2018. His next touchdown would tie him for sixth all-time in Sun Devil Football history and mark him one of just 11 Sun Devils total to reach double digits in a single season. It would be the most since Jaelen Strong had 10 in 2014.
  • Tyson is the first Sun Devil to catch two touchdowns in two straight games since Frank Darby had back-to-back two-score games at UCLA (10/26/19) and vs. USC (11/9/19).
  • His 176 receiving yards are the most since Brandon Aiyuk put up 196 on Washington State back on Oct. 12, 2019. It is the most receiving yards in a road game since Devin Lucien had 200 yards at California on Nov. 28, 2015.
SAM I AM
  • Last quarterback to throw for three touchdowns in the first half was Jayden Daniels vs. UCLA on October 26, 2019.
WHY THEY WON
  • Arizona State owned the time of possession battle, including several clever maneuvers to drain the clock in the fourth quarter. ASU finished with a 36:36-23:24 advantage in time of possession.
  • The Sun Devils defense held Kansas State to just 1-of-3 success rate on fourth down, creating momentum by registering a few clutch stops.
  • Brian Ward’s defense forced three turnovers, including the game-sealing interception by Shamari Simmons in the endzone with 21 seconds remaining.
HE DOES IT ALL
  • Cam Skattebo was once again featured offensively in Arizona State’s win.
  • He finished with 73 rushing yards and 44 receiving yards, eclipsing the century mark in all-purpose yardage.
  • Since becoming a Sun Devil, Skattebo now has 100+ all-purpose yards in 12 of 21 games. That includes seven games this season.

Big 12 Preview: UCF v ASU week (Survive and advance)

In the Big 12 a team with only 2 or less conference losses has a shot at a conference championship game and by extension the Playoff. (Conference Losses)
UCF (4) @ ASU (2)
#8 BYU (0)
@ Utah (4)
#17 Iowa State (1) @ Kansas (4)
UWV (2) @ Cincy (2)
Colorado (1) @ Texas Tech (2)
Bye: Kansas State (2)

Vegas seems to have grasped the parity of the Big 12. This week....
#9 BYU (8-0) is only a 4 point favorite at quarterbackless Utah (4-4)
#17 Iowa State (7-1) is only a 3 point favorite at Kansas (2-6)
I guess being a top team in the Big 12 means you won some games, but it doesn't necessarily give you any street cred. Top 10 teams in other conferences are double digit favorites against unranked opponents.

Of the 8 teams remaining in the hunt for the Big 12 belt, not a single one is favored this week by more than 4.5 points.

The "big picture" dream scenario for the Big 12 would probably be for Colorado and BYU to separate themselves from the group and win out. Prime coaching for a spot in the Playoff against an undefeated, top 5 team would be a publicity dream come true. Especially a matchup with the optics of Prime's Colorado contrasted against Provo. It's not exactly a 30 for 30 Catholics v Convicts but it's as much of a headliner as the Big 12 could hope for this season.

Conversely, a Kansas State v West Virginia matchup where everyone has 2+ losses and the country wants Army and Boise State to get the 4th and 5th spots would be the nightmare.

But let the chips fall where they may. ASU gets the same playoff payout regardless of any outcome. My picks bolded and in color above.

STORY: Second half dominance leads to ASU's win over GCU

“You just don't know when things will click all the time. Working with the guys all summer into the fall, I saw the potential of what they could do.” All ASU has done in the last few games is justify the preseason buzz; a win over GCU didn't change that sentiment

ASU Women's Volleyball Thread

ASU will be hosting the Houston Cougars (8-7 & 3-2 in conference play) at Mullett Arena tonight, Wednesday October 16th.

The Devils are ranked #13 with a 16-2 (5-1), 6-0 record at home and on a 4-game winning streak (all conference matches).

This will be one of the only few games carried on one of ESPN's primary channels and not ESPN+.

Hopefully you'll have a chance to tune in...It will be entertaining to watch and ASU should win this one in straight sets (3-0).

Don't Look Now

As there are, by my count, at least 5 to 6 teams in the SEC that could win that conference in football and the question for today is this...

What happens if four or five teams that include Tenn, TAMU, Texas, Georgia, Bama and Ole Miss some how tie for the conference championship..??

Sure, they will come up with a winner through their conference championship game but what does that do to involvement in the national playoffs..??

The B!G is a little easier to figure out since there are only four teams (Indiana, Oregon, Ohio St and Penn St) that could still win that conference but all of those teams might make the playoffs, right..??

So, where does that leave the ACC and the Big-12..??

The ACC is going to come down to SMU, Clemson and Miami...

And, the Big-12 is going to come down to BYU, CU, K-State, Iowa St and ASU it looks like...

Could the SEC really get 5-6 teams in the playoffs..??

And, could the B1G get four teams in the playoffs..??

And, what about Notre Dame..??

And, does that mean that the ACC and Big-12 might only get one team in the playoffs (or maybe a team in the Big-12 doesn't get a selection for that matter)...

BYU is the only unbeaten team that is ranked in the Top 10 right now and CU, ISU, K-State and ASU all have two losses as of now...

However, if CU closes the season out at 10-2 and 8-1 does anyone think that the Buffs, with PT coaching the team, that they won't make the playoffs even with two or more losses, if they win the championship..??

In any event, it will be a very interesting road to follow in the coming weeks...

Go ASU and Go Big-12!!!

Playing hurt v injured

Utah QB tore a ligament in his foot last week that holds bones and the arch together. The doctor said he was shocked the kid could even stand and he will need season ending surgery.

What’s remarkable is this happened before halftime and the Utah staff injected him with pain meds, put a steel plate in his shoe and made him play the 2nd half.

Earlier this season Utah QB Cam Rising suffered a season ending injury in the first quarter against ASU and Utah shot him up with pain meds and he played the rest of the game.

All of this in a season where Utah is 1-5 in conference. I understand playing hurt. I don’t understand playing injured. Especially in a throw away season.

This reminds me of Tracy Smith throwing kids 100+ pitches on opening weekend because his career needed wins more than he cared about the health of his pitchers.

Compare that to Dillingham who sits Skat even when Skat is begging to play.

ASU vs. Grand Canyon

I’ve been switching back and forth between our women’s volleyball game at West Virginia, and our women’s basketball game against Grand Canyon. What an incredible difference! Our women’s volleyball team is so well coached, and fun to watch play. Our women’s basketball team on the other hand, is almost unwatchable!😱 Just goes to show how incredibly incompetent our last AD was, that he hired our present coach. In the meantime, the coach he probably should have hired, the current coach at Grand Canyon, Molly Miller is a terrific coach. She was sitting in our own backyard the whole time. Apparently, all she’s done in her time at GCU, is win 84% of her games. Guess that kind of coaching wasn’t good enough for our former AD!🤷🏻‍♂️ Don’t know what it will take to unload our present coach, but it needs to happen!
